TORONTO, ONTARIO, NOVEMBER 20, 2018: (TSX:NFI) Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a U.S. subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., ("NFI"), the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer and parts distributor in North America, debuted its revolutionary new D45 CRT LE Commuter Coach today at CUTA's (Canadian Urban Transit Association) Canadian Transit Show, establishing a major milestone in all-accessible public transit.

"We are proud to introduce Canada to our newest Commuter Rapid Transit (CRT) Coach at CUTA's annual meeting," said Patrick Scully, MCI Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The MCI D45 CRT LE represents one of the most innovative design processes in MCI's 85-year history and a major turning point in how transit systems can serve both distance commuters and passengers with greater accessibility needs with a singular model."

It was more than three years ago that MCI invited volunteer representatives from National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD) and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) to review design concepts for this revolutionary new coach. In total, 32 concepts – co-designed by longtime MCI partner Designworks, a BMW Group company – were developed and refined for this first top-to-bottom D-Series coach redesign in more than two decades.

MCI, its partners and these leading accessibility advocacy groups would select a design featuring a mid-vehicle second door with an automatic ramp and patented curb-level vestibule with flexible seating for all passengers, including those with wheelchairs and other mobility devices. The front entry features a well-lit, ergonomically designed spiral entryway that leads to upper-level forward seating, creating a dual-entry coach that provides easy onboarding/offboarding for all passengers with dwell times comparable to traditional low-floor transit models.

With in-demand digital amenities ranging from Wi-Fi and power outlets to MCI's standard comfortable ride, this rugged 45-foot coach follows in a proud history of MCI workhorse vehicles. It is purpose-built for highway speeds and designed for the modern distance commute with comfortable, roomy seating and a Battery-Electric version coming in 2020.

In August, MCI announced its first order for the new model. Banff-based Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission will put four MCI D45 CRT LE Commuter Coaches to work this spring in its Roam public transit system expansion between scenic Banff and Lake Louise in the Bow Valley of Alberta's Rockies.

As of today, MCI has a total of 83 North American D45 CRT LE's on order with deliveries to begin in 2019.

"It's been a remarkable journey of achievement for our engineers and new product development teams that have made this model possible," said Scully. "For the past several months we've allowed public and private transportation operators to test the MCI D45 CRT LE in a wide range of operating environments and road conditions and the feedback has been outstanding from passengers and operators alike. Orders to date indicate how rapidly the industry has embraced this unique motor coach model."

Tom Wagner, Vice President of Public Sector added: "Despite so many industry firsts, our newest Commuter Coach carries the reputation for reliability, longevity and value MCI is known for. We see this model as an answer for operators seeking the right vehicle for both the load demand and accessibility needs on any commuter route. No other bus manufacturer has engaged the kind of user-based testing that brought the MCI D45 CRT LE to market."

Performance tests have also been impressive. The new model recently passed the Altoona-test, named for the Altoona, PA testing center that rigorously tests the reliability of all new bus models, completing 10-month of tests demonstrating a 12-year, 500,000-mile service life.

"We look forward to assisting Canadian transit agencies in developing a more diverse, accessible fleet for the future," said Scully.
