STRATEGIC MOVES AT MCI FOR 2017
IAN SMART NAMED PRESIDENT, MOTOR COACH BUSINESS
AND BRIAN DEWSNUP NAMED PRESIDENT, AFTERMARKET PARTS BUSINESS
DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, DECEMBER 27, 2016: (TSX:NFI) (TSX:NFI.DB.U) Motor Coach Industries ("MCI"), a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. (the "Company"), the largest bus and motor coach manufacturer in North America, is kicking off 2017 with expanded leadership and a customer-centric operating structure.
Effective January 1, 2017, Ian Smart, currently Executive Vice President, Aftermarket of New Flyer, becomes President, Motor Coach Business of MCI, and Brian Dewsnup becomes President, Parts Business for both New Flyer and MCI.
Ian joined New Flyer in 2011 from StandardAero, one of the largest independent aviation repair and overhaul companies in the world. At StandardAero Ian held various executive positions such as Vice President Corporate Strategy, Vice President Marketing & Business Development, and Vice President of StandardAero's largest Business Unit. Ian has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and was the project leader of the privatization and LEAN implementation at a United States Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
The Company also announced the combination of the New Flyer and MCI aftermarket parts businesses under Brian Dewsnup in Louisville, Kentucky. Currently Vice President and General Manager of the MCI aftermarket business, Brian will become President of the combined New Flyer and MCI aftermarket parts businesses. Brian was previously the CFO of North American Bus Industries (NABI) which was acquired by New Flyer in 2013. Prior to that Brian served as Controller of Johns Manville's Waterville operations — a Berkshire Hathaway Company, and held various finance capacities at Ford Motor Company and Visteon Corporation. Brian has an MBA in Finance, a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Paul Soubry, who remains as President and Chief Executive Officer of New Flyer Industries Inc., the parent company of New Flyer and MCI, said: "We've accomplished what we set out to do for 2016. We took a year to evaluate and understand the strengths of MCI and to develop our growth plan for 2017 and beyond." The next step Soubry said, is to "judiciously align our organizational structure and capital deployment plans to create the best environment for customer support, enhanced competitiveness and growth. Ian and Brian have the backgrounds to take MCI and the aftermarket parts businesses to the next level."
To build MCI's customer focus, Mr. Smart will be responsible for all aspects of motor coach design, engineering, purchasing, sales and marketing, production and operations including the direction of service and support. Formerly managed within MCI aftermarket business, the six MCI service centers, field service teams, warranty and the technical call center, which assists operators, technicians and drivers around the clock, will now be managed by the original equipment manufacturer ("OEM") side of MCI. Soubry explained "The change in customer and field support reporting has been very successful at New Flyer, so going forward the OEM team at MCI will own the support and reliability of what they design and build."
In a related move, MCI and New Flyer aftermarket parts, training and publications are combining into one business under the Company. "The move makes us the largest bus and motor coach parts supplier in North America so we can work to a common platform and improve our inventory utilization and delivery performance," said Mr. Soubry.
In 2016, New Flyer began investments in MCI's facilities and I.T. harmonization along with a factory-wide transformation to enhance MCI's Quality-at-the-Source, "zero defect" production culture. Further investments in 2017 are planned on next generation product development as well as service centers and support infrastructure.
With these moves, Mr. Soubry said, "MCI will be best prepared to serve our customers today and tomorrow, allowing us to apply our engineering and production expertise including electric propulsion technology."
